Three Parts Sand, One Water
A Brickies delight when it comes to food and drink
What an apt name for a cool bar on the South Bank...'Concrete', is a cafe and bar and nestled within The Hayward.
Situated at the front of the gallery, it is more than welcoming, practically homely and serves light refreshments and lunch during the day, and in the evening, it turns into a late-night bar serving a variety of specialist beers, wines and vodkas.
The design of Concrete echoes The Hayward's striking 1960s architecture. The gallery's extensive use of concrete both inside and outside is visible in the cafe interior, which has been stripped back to expose the original concrete walls and services.
The fixtures and furnishings provide an informal and relaxed feel to the space. Concrete displays works of contemporary art, and a concrete-mixer outlined by fluorescent pink strip lighting, created by artist David Batchelor, is displayed outside the cafe. A rotating programme of contemporary video works, curated by Ralph Rugoff, Director of The Hayward, are also screened.
So watch the concrete as it dries for more cool art and culture - take it all in on the South Bank.
