Exchange Alley

The first tea was sold here in the famous old coffee houses.

The great fire of Cornhill in March 1748 was started here and went on to destroy nearly 100 houses, including the two famous rival coffee-houses, Jonathan's and Jerusalem here.

Garraways famous coffee house was first burnt down in this fire, and lasted another 120 years before closing down for good. Garraways was much celebrated for its sandwiches, sherry, pale ale, and punch. Thomas Garraway was the first man who sold tea in London, and was renowned for it's quality.
