Michael Caine's Perfect Robot
A Robot, a club, and an acting talent that was just starting out
There has been a Methodist witness on this site since 1813, 'Walworth Methodist Church' - that's 190 years.
And so to this very location back in 1944 and 'Clubland', a youth club run by the Rev. Charles Butterworth who ran the club as a sports club for boys and a drama class for girls.
And so it was that a young 'Michael Caine' joined the drama group here because of a combination of clumsiness and lust! I love from afar with one of the drama group's leading lights, a lass called Any Hood.
One of his earliest appearances in a Clubland production was as a robot in Karel Capek's 1920 play Rossum's Universal Robots...claiming that he didn't know what was going on in the play.
That's needn't have mattered, he was praised in reviews as playing a robot to perfection.
His acting talent and legend may have been born here!
