South Mere Lake is located in an open park with mature and young trees. It is a large lake, used for canoeing and sailing by Greenwich Waterports Centre. Thamesmead's high rise housing overlooks the lake, and it is close to the Thames, part of Plumstead Marshes. The lake was constructed in the late 1960s at the same time as the first part of Thamesmead.
