Chrisp Street Market
This was the first pedestrianised shopping centre.
This former Easts London Victorian street market was redesigned in 1951 as part of the living architecture element of the 1951 Festival of Britain.
It was then celebrated as the first ever pedestrianised shopping centre of its kind and today has been reinvigorated by the opening of the DLR station next to it.
Today the Tower Hamlets market stalls and shops sell anything and everything from plants and fruit to clothes, bed linen and kids toys.
