Hampton Court Privy Garden

This is where Elizabeth I would walk and talk with courtiers.

Queen Elizabeth I often used to take brisk walks through the Privy Garden in view from the stately windows of Hampton Court Palace. Though never in public would she be seen vulgerly walking fast 'to catch her a heate'.

It was here in these gardens she talked with Melville, the Scots ambassador, who described how Elizabeth tried to make him admit that she was more beautiful and more accomplished than Mary Queen of Scots.

Melville, a competent court flaterer, could only escape from the ordeal with difficulty and with barely his loyalty to his mistress in tact.

Location: Hampton Court, London
