The Benbow House Bear Garden

The site of the infamous Southwark bear-baiting pits.


This is the site of one of the most infamous Bear baiting animal fighting pits. Excavations here include a dog kennel and animal-baiting arena dated to the 16th and 17th centuries, and associated butchered bone.

A glasshouse was also found as well as the Bear Gardens pothouse (producing tin-glazed ware) occupied the site in the 17th and earlier 18th centuries, giving way to a foundry and metalworks in the 18th and 19th centuries.
